Jeffrey Jacobs of Slate & Stone (slateandstoneclothing.com)
Who he is: Manhattan native Jeffrey Jacobs grew up learning the fashion business from his father and mentor, Gary, a veteran in the design and manufacturing industry who made his name producing a private label for the Limited. Although his first postcollege gig involved managing artists for music labels Atlantic Records and Def Jam, Jacobs returned to his family roots with the launch of his debut menswear brand this September.
About the line: Working with wool- and cotton-blend fabrics sourced from Italy, Portugal and Japan, Jacobs creates contemporary menswear pieces that can “transition from the workplace to a bar or going on a plane to Europe,” he says. His versatile tops ($125–$395), pants ($165–$215), outerwear ($175–$595) and accessories ($112–$195) are named after NYC streets, and combine sophisticated, classic cuts with a rugged aesthetic. “When I go through the design process, it’s three steps for me,” notes Jacobs. “Imagine what you want, feel a fabric and then watch the garment come to life.” Next fall, Jacobs will debut a line of complementary footwear ($245–$295) that mixes unexpected textiles, such as alligator leather with wool.
Where to buy: Rothman’s (222 Park Ave South at 18th St; 212-777-7400, rothmansny.com) and Alter (109 Franklin St at Greenpoint Ave, Greenpoint, Brooklyn; 718-784-8818 • 407 Graham Ave between Jackson and Withers Sts, Williamsburg, Brooklyn; 718-609-0203 • alterbrooklyn.com).
