Who he is: Peter Manning’s dreams of a clothing line for shorter men dates back to a teenage hankering for bell-bottoms while growing up in Larchmont, New York. “My mother said, ‘By the time I shorten them, they won’t be bell-bottoms anymore,” recalls the Tony Award–winning producer and former real-estate developer, who stands 5'8". “My entire life, I’ve never had a pair of pants that fit me—everything has to get tailored.” Despite a lack of formal training, Manning began working with local pattern-makers on a collection of “re-proportioned” menswear for guys his height and shorter, and debuted the resulting collection in March 2012.

About the line: Manning’s range of classic American sportswear is designed first and foremost with fit in mind. Italian-wool dress pants ($198), slim-fit khaki chinos ($79) and French-fleece sweatpants ($65) all come in inseams as short as 27 inches, while oxford shirts ($98) and crewneck sweaters ($65–$89) are specifically proportioned for shorter limbs and torsos. “It’s not trend-driven,” notes Manning of his timeless traditional looks. “It’s not Tom Ford.” The label will relocate from Union Square to a Dumbo studio in January, and recently collaborated with a pair of experts in the borough it will soon call home: Luxe cashmere-wool blazers ($795) come courtesy of legendary tailor Martin Greenfield (, while straight-leg jeans ($98) were designed in partnership with Williamsburg’s Brooklyn Denim Co. ( Each new piece must first pass Manning’s personal fit test. “I am the customer, so I really know how he feels,” he says. “I’m passionate about getting it right.”
