This Oriental-decor dealer has been importing home furnishings from the Middle East and North Africa for more than eight years, which means it surpassed the original Scheherazade’s 1001 Arabian Nights about five years and several dozen divans ago. Rich walnut benches, tables and mirrors from Syria with mother-of-pearl inlays ($650–$1,600) are almost too pretty to use, despite their solid heft.

On 5/11/2012, while completing a social media strategy for this company, the shopkeeper Rachid Ouassil suddenly became extremely irate and asked me to follow him to the back of his shop where you can't be seen from outside. When I refused, he told me "you better go before something happens to you." I immediately reported this incident to the local precinct who now have this on record. Throughout our interactions together, Mr. Rachid complained about Christians and made pejorative comments regarding Christianity as a legitimate faith. As a Jewish person, I was unimpressed with this shopkeeper's religious bigotry and feel that Orchard Street has no place for hate. I would not feel safe entering this shop again.
