Broker's fee: One month's rent ($2,250)
Broker: Victoria Hagman, Realty Collective (718-834-1440, realtycollective.com, email@example.com)
Moved in: March 2011
The area: "I was interested in Carroll Gardens, because I'd moved there a year ago and wanted to stay there," says Day. "From past experience, I'd learned to choose neighborhoods over apartments. I like that it's kind of a mix—I always tell everyone it's where you go when you get over Williamsburg but are not quite ready for Park Slope. I also love the shops and the restaurants and brownstones and all that."
The broker: Says Day, "Not to be biased or anything [because Day and Hagman, the broker, are friends], but I think Victoria has a good thing going. I know a lot of her brokers, and they're just regular people. I've had a lot of experience with bad brokers, but these are just Brooklynites from the neighborhood."
The best thing: "As soon as we walked in," says Hong, "it was so bright and everything seemed really solid. With a lot of brownstones and old buildings, everything is painted over: the electric sockets and the light fixtures. But this one had nice hardwood floors and was super sunny. The big draw for me was the kitchen: It's big and has a lot of counter space. It's more conducive to cooking."
The price: "I find that once you cross the BQE, the price kind of drops; everything seems to hop up significantly on the other side," says Day. "We're technically considered in the Columbia Waterfront District, and it's near Red Hook—I love the neighborhood."
