The apartment: Is this apartment in Park Slope? The map says no, but the current young professional inhabitants (two environmental architects fixing up a tandem bicycle in the back garden) say yes. The hallway is shabby, and an exterminator was on his way out, though, to be fair, the building is sprayed monthly as a precautionary measure. The place is a great deal, and excellent for sharing. There are two good-size bedrooms with closets on either end of the space; one bedroom has its own entrance and a boarded-up fireplace. A large stove is the highlight of the kitchen, which opens up into a high-ceilinged living area that looks like it could be great for entertaining. The apartment was renovated about a year and a half ago, and it still feels pristine. The building manager spoke knowledgeably about the other tenants—I got the impression he was on friendly, first-name terms with them all. He also gave me every possible commuting option and mentioned the tours of Green-Wood Cemetery at the end of the block.

1BR house, $2,000
145 23rd St between Third and Fourth Aves
Included: No utilities included, in-house laundry, dishwasher, parking space
Broker’s fee: None
To move in: One month’s rent, one-month security, $30 credit check
The HOUSE: Built between taller old-style apartment buildings, this small dwelling has a cement yard that can fit two cars. Inside, everything is brand-new. A kitchen, a full bathroom and a spacious living room make up your ground floor. Upstairs, there’s another full bathroom and a large bedroom/office area. In the basement, you’ll find your own laundry. It all sounds incredible—if you’re willing to deal with the sweet smell of the BQE, which is right at the end of the block. But we repeat: your own house, laundry, dishwasher and parking space for $2,000!
