Rob the Mover
Band with a Van
Many enterprising performers busk or bartend to earn extra dough, but these musicians had another idea: In 2007, they decided to launch a side business and use their tour van to haul other people's gear, too. The guys charge in half-hour increments, so the service is perfect for last-minute flea-market or Craigslist finds. You can book one man for $35 per half hour or two men for $60 per half hour (including the van), and they'll even deduct 10 percent if you reserve a week in advance. (917-514-9357, bandwithavan.com)
Sven Moving
Sven Wechsler relocated to New York from Colorado to pursue his dreams of becoming a comedian, but after six months of waiting tables, he set up this schlepping service. The crew will tote your belongings anywhere within the five boroughs, and while there is a two-hour minimum per job, the team provides blankets, cellophane and dollies to speed the process along. During the beginning or end of the month, you'll pay a flat rate based on a quote, while midmonth rates are hourly ($50/hour for one man, $75/hour for two men). (718-487-9806, svenmoving.com)
Rob the Mover
You may not need a master's degree and six years of experience to move, but former teacher Rob Martin happens to have both. The jovial, bearded gentleman will move anything except a piano anywhere in the NYC area, and he'll create a customized quote depending on your needs. If you're toting only a couple pieces or fewer, Martin will work out a reasonable flat rate. (646-783-9362, robthemover.com)
NYcityVAN
If your furniture requires assembly, disassembly or anything remotely complex, allow one of the tool-toting men at this six-year-old company to save you from an afternoon of hair-pulling. The operation offers insurance coverage and standard packing equipment, in addition to handyman services (available upon request). The company charges a regular rate of $75 for one man and $100 for two (both including the van), with a one-and-a-half-hour minimum. At the month's end, the fee is slightly higher: $130 for two men and a van. (212-242-1500, nycityvan.com)
