Peter Knox, 26, assistant marketing manager; Andrea Hopkins, 28, architect
Rent:
$1,450
Broker's fee: about 9% ($1,600)
Broker: Margaret Ragosta (718-834-4811, mytwins@nyc.rr.com
Moved in: September 2010

Deciding to use a broker: "We spent all day just searching nonbroker apartments [on Craigslist], and at the last second we decided to do one more search with a broker," Knox says. "And this place just seemed like it had everything we wanted, and so we decided [we'd] try it. We [saw it and] came out knowing we wanted it. And if you added the broker's fee spread out over a year, it was less money than other places we were finding. [Our broker] did really good work for us. She was able to take care of all of the paperwork, all of the problems, and we had a signed lease the next week."

The best thing about our place: "Great lighting," says Knox. "We have four western-facing windows at the back of the apartment. It's on a side street, so when we look out our back window we see trees, a church on Court Street and a courtyard behind us. You can see the sunset, and the sun doesn't wake you up in the morning."

The furniture: "[Andrea] just went on Craigslist and started buying things, like our kitchen trolley, [which has] a wine rack, drawers, and our microwave and toaster underneath," says Knox. "Without it, I don't know where we'd put these things. And then she picked up two chairs, one French wrought-iron chair in the West Village and a Dutch chair in Chinatown.
