Crispy artichokes at Boulud Sud

Super-chef Daniel Boulud expands his Lincoln Center--area holdings with Boulud Sud, a 120-seat Mediterranean restaurant, around the corner from Bar Boulud. The grillery is set to debut on the same day (May 9) as the chef's new French market, picerie Boulud. Starting with France's Cte d'Azur, the menu at Sud skips down the Mediterranean coast, taking inspiration from Europe and Africa. Expect a range of refined plates, like octopus la plancha with a marcona-almond puree and orange salad, and braised lamb shoulder with dried apricots and spices. Desserts also reflect the region's diversity, with pastries such as North African baklava, the Spanish nut confection torrone and Italian panforte, a chewy spiced chocolate cake. The elegant main dining room evokes French midcentury modern with vaulted ceilings, terrrazzo marble floors, and a series of Vik Muniz's Impressionistic photographs inspired by artists like Van Gogh, Czanne and Matisse. On one side, floor-to-ceiling windows offer views of the street, while on the other, toques are the show, dispatching plates from an open kitchen.
