Day of Show: Your weekend concert guide
Fri Mar 20 2009
Even with the migration of musicians and their fans to Austin for SXSW, concerts in New York keep on ticking through the weekend. Tonight, the wild local collective Heloise and the Savoir Faire brings its reliable fun electrosexual routine to the Highline Ballroom, in the far west reaches of Manhattan. Check your sense of shame at the door. And there's more!
*The Mexican singer-songwriter Lila Downs (heard in Frida) plays Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall tonight.
*The awesome retro soulman Raphael Saadiq puts on his skinny tie and large glasses to play Fillmore New York at Irving Plaza on Saturday.
*Pianist Marilyn Crispell plays the Stone on Saturday, both solo (at 8pm) and in a trio with violinist Michelle Makarski and drummer Lukas Ligeti (at 10pm).
*On Sunday, head to (Le) Poisson Rouge to check out the young Danish group the Asteroids Galaxy Tour.
*Or also Sunday, try the Apollo Theater, where Shirley Caesar, Shari Addison, Hezekiah Walker and the Love Fellowship Choir, Sweet Honey in the Rock, and more gather for A Celebration of Spiritual and Gospel Music.
