Listen now: Josh Mease

Josh Mease sings in a hush, reserved and polite. His album, Wilderness (Frog Stand), is smart and well behaved, cut from the mold of delicate pop artists from both the past (Harry Nilsson, Paul McCartney) and present (Richard Swift, Inara George). In such work, arrangements are crucial, and Mease resists the temptation to add clutter. Even when the setting seems fancy, with clavinet and backing choirs, the recording is spare—he is confident in his songs. Tonight Mease celebrates the album's release at Mercury Lounge on a tempting bill that also includes Sharon Van Etten, Hey Rosetta! and La Strada. Below is Wilderness's lead-off track, "You Found Me."
