Last night, soul-rock superstar Lenny Kravitz played the second gig of his five-night run at the Fillmore New York, which continues tomorrow (Wednesday, October 14). Check out pics from the show above, and click past the jump for a brief review.
Kravitz didn't impress so much with his pipes or his ax work, though both were respectable. Most exciting was his easygoing magnetism onstage: All he had to do to light up the crowd was flash one of his 1,000-watt grins. Kravitz saved the hits ("American Woman," "Fly Away," "Are You Gonna Go My Way") for last, spending most of the set on long, jammy versions of recent tunes such as "Dancin' Til Dawn," during which he worked in a few bars apiece of both MJ's "Billie Jean" and Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall, Part II." A versatile, horn-abetted backing band ensured seamless stylistic shifts, from acid rock to smooth soul and back. In the audience, a joyous dance-club vibe prevailed. Even behind the VIP velvet rope, everyone seemed more than happy to obey Kravitz's "Let Love Rule" directive, including hip-hop all-stars ?uestlove and Jay-Z.
