Here's what I had to say about Nine Inch Nails after watching the band perform at Bonnaroo:

Late on Saturday when Trent Reznor said that the Bonnaroo show he was wrapping up would be Nine Inch Nails' last, I totally think he was being serious. He said something along the lines of that NIN was driving him insane, and then thanked the fans for the years of support. I think the dude is done, at least for a while. It's a shame, too, because that set may have been the best I caught all weekend.

It turns out I'm a sucker. As we featured in TONY last week, Trent Reznor & Co. are playing the final NIN shows over the course of the next few weeks—last night's show was, apparently, the final Nine Inch Nails show in New York City. The set was excellent, long, sweaty, thrilling and sad. Let me offer a breakdown:

Awesome
-- The band played songs that spanned its career, from its first release ever ("Down in It") to songs on The Slip ("1,000,000," "Head Down"). Check the full set list (of 33 songs!) after the jump, and watch them play "Hurt" above.

-- The NIN lighting display will probably go down as one of the best ever.

-- Smoke machines are underutilized in contemporary music. Props to Reznor for overutilizing them.

-- The fans were real fans, almost all of them singing every lyric along with Reznor.

-- Peter Murphy (of Bauhaus) entered Terminal 5 from the ceiling, as a bat.

Weak
-- Peter Murphy stayed too long, and the final songs weren't Nine Inch Nails--centric.

-- The left speaker blew out near the end, and a couple songs suffered until it was corrected.

-- Terminal 5 was way too hot (Reznor said so himself), too crowded and, man, if you can get a good view of the stage when that place is sold out, my hat is off to you. The Bowery folks are smart; hopefully they can get that place operating more smoothly.
