Locations, times and prices vary; call 212-355-6100 or visit fiaf.org for details. Nineteen artists from around the globe will present genre-bending works during the French Institute Alliance Français’s sixth annual fall festival. Musician Bill Frisell kicks off the monthlong series, playing his unique mash-up of country, rock, blues and jazz on opening night, as well as an 8am concert—Early (Not too Late)—and an 8pm one—Close Your Eyes—both on September 15. Choreographer Sarah Michelson, who was in residence during the most recent Whitney Biennial this spring, will present “Not a Lecture/Performance,” which combines elements of both types of events. Bel Borba, who’s called “The People’s Picasso” in his native Brazil, will create pop-up sculptures around the city using found items; at the end of the festival, he’ll present all 30 pieces together in an installation. Visit a ranch house constructed in the Essex Street Market to see David Levine’s 90-minute play Habit, which the actors will perform in a continuous loop over eight hours (while eating, drinking and washing themselves according to their needs). Meanwhile, participating artists will delve into the process behind their works in a series of conversations.
