Intoxicating, silly and stylish, this Gershwin-based musical comedy is no work at all for New York theater crowds.

Nice Work If You Can Get It on Broadway: Show information

Imperial Theatre. Music and lyrics by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin. Book by Joe DiPietro. Dir. Kathleen Marshall. With Matthew Broderick, Kelli O’Hara. 2hrs 30mins. One intermission.

Fifteen jazzy, swoony songs by George and Ira Gershwin form the best part of this new catalog musical, set in the Roaring ’20s and following the escapades of various bootleggers, chorus girls and politicians. At the height of Prohibition, fast-living, skirt-chasing Jimmy Winter finds his fortunes intertwined with those of female hooch-smuggler Billie Bendix. While at first the tomboy resists the playboy, you know that true love will out, as sure as a cork from a shaken champagne bottle. The delightful score includes Gershwin standards such as “But Not for Me,” “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off,” “I’ve Got a Crush on You” and “Someone to Watch Over Me,” as well as the title tune. Joe DiPietro’s shamelessly goofy book strings one-liners and sight gags between director-choreographer Kathleen Marshall’s bright, bouncy staging. If you like your Broadway shows fizzy, light, elegant and old-fashioned, Nice Work is the right ticket for you.—David Cote
