The best (and worst) theater of 2012
A slew of splendid Broadway revivals and boundary-busting experiments Off Broadway made for a great year.
Mon Dec 17 2012
Although the typical theater season (following the Tony Awards calendar, as well as other prizes) starts in June and runs until the following June, now’s our chance to look back on 2012. The year started with the most exciting new complex in years, the Pershing Square Signature Center. Similarly, the Public gave its lobby a gorgeous makeover. Playwrights collective 13P sailed into history with a fine farewell. There were time-bending marathon events such as DruidMurphy and Roman Tragedies, stunning play revivals and no less impressive new musicals, such as the wildly inventive Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812. So without further ado, here are our picks for best and worst theater of 2012, a wonderfully varied year. For extra fun, we've included some shows we're looking forward to in 2013, and ten honorable mentions from 2012.
