Even if Pitch Perfect is your favorite femme-focused music movie, there’s much deeper stuff to be seen when it comes to chanteuse-centered cinema (no offense to Anna Kendrick). Oscar-winning documentary 20 Feet from Stardom affords backup singers an all-too-rare moment in the spotlight, putting faces to the voices that filled out iconic tracks like “Young Americans,” “Walk on the Wild Side” and “Gimme Shelter.” It’s well worth a viewing on its own, but today Grammy Award winner Lisa Fischer, above, one of the featured unsung heroines who has backed Beyoncé, Aretha and Mick Jagger, is on hand to reflect on her place in an industry saddled with gender and racial prejudice, where luck often wins out over talent and ambition.
