The South Street Seaport area, which was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy last year, is still in the process of recovering from the storm. One bit of good news for the area is the new Brooklyn Flea–run market opening Memorial Day weekend. Dubbed SmorgasBar at South St. Seaport, the pop-up market will feature two outdoor bars, a stage for bands, boutiques housed in shipping containers and a projection screen for films (during opening weekend you can see Big, Iron Man and Sleepless in Seattle). Participating food and drink vendors include Asia Dog, Blue Marble Ice Cream, Brooklyn Oyster Party, Brooklyn Soda Works, Fonda, Landhaus, Milk Truck Grilled Cheese, Pizza Moto, Red Hook Lobster Pound and Rice & Miso Everyday. And unlike the other Brooklyn Flea offerings in Dumbo, Fort Greene and Williamsburg, the market will be open all week long (Mon–Thu, Sun 11am–10pm; Fri, Sat 11am–11pm).
The project is part of the larger See/Change intiative that aims to get the Seaport area back on its feet with food, film and music events throughout the summer. Check back next week for more details on that initiative.
