A precursor to Freud and Surrealism, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is one of the most beloved books from the Victorian era. Written under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll by mathematician Charles Dodgson, it began in 1862 as a tale told to his 10-year-old neighbor, Alice Liddell; meticulously illustrated by John Tenniel, it was published three years later as the version we know today.

Celebrating Alice’s 150th anniversary, this enchanting exhibition includes the original manuscript, unique drawings, proofs, photographs and other objects associated with the story. Highlights include two versions of Carroll’s controversial albumen print of a scantily attired Alice, posing as The Beggar Maid, including a rare hand-colored example.

The centerpiece, however, remains Tenniel’s illustrations depicting Carroll’s unforgettable characters: the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat and, of course, the White Rabbit, who once again takes us down his adventurous hole thanks to this show.—Paul Laster
