Some of the biggest art events happening each spring in New York begin today: The Armory Show 2013 kicks off today and runs through Saturday afternoon. (Despite its name, this year's event takes place at Piers 92/94, on Manhattan's West Side.)

Thanks to that event's popularity, a few other bazaars also set up shop around the same time, including ADAA: The Art Show (which takes place at the actual Park Avenue Armory), Volta NY, and the smaller—and, best of all, free—Independent 2013. Read on for more about these shows, and check out our guide to spring's best art events for more seasonal happenings.

Independent 2013

The art fair that isn't really sort of an art fair opens its fourth edition, with the usual mix of young modish galleries presenting the work of their artists in a format that eschews booths, favoring a group exhibition format. If shows like the Whitney Biennial were actually done right, they'd resemble the Independent. Bonus: Unlike at the more commercial fairs, admission to this one is free.
