    Get your hair did---for free!

    Thu Jan 22

We know it's hard times out there, but letting your hair go ( la Mickey Rourke) just isn't an option. To ease the pain of forking over for a chop, East Village salon Birds & Fellas is offering free haircuts to new customers after their second paid haircut. Sound confusing? It's not. Just hang in there for two (relatively cheap) snips and then get your third one free. That's rad, but it was the complimentary seasonal drinks (martinis in the summer, wine in the winter) that convinced me to make an appointment. (Note: Birds & Fellas is not responsible for this cat's 'do. It's a wig!)

DVD deal of the day: The Wire: The Complete Series

    Thu Jan 22

Full disclosure: As a native Baltimorean, I am duty-bound to love The Wire, which gives perhaps the most realistic—and yes, gritty and unforgiving—depiction of Charm City (ohh, that nickname) that you'll find in fiction. But don't just take my word for it: Our own Film editor David Fear called it "the HBO show that ranks somewhere between Citizen Kane and the Second Coming of Christ." Indeed. And now, the entire the series can be yours—and for the paltry sum of $81.99, no less, which is more than 60 percent off the retail price. While you're waiting to get this amazing deal in your hot little hands, go read TONY's interview with Michael K. Williams, a.k.a. cold-blooded thug (and thug-killer) Omar. He cries!

    TV: Watch out

    Thu Jan 22

TONIGHT: Burn Notice (10pm on USA) "My name is Michael Weston. I used to be a spy." So begins each episode of USA's underrated action series, explaining the simple premise: A spook gets fired and dumped in his hometown of Miami. Now Weston (Jeffrey Donovan) uses his mad espionage skills to fend off old enemies, new enemies, ex-girlfriends, etc. This spy is smoother than Bond but perennially peeved—hey, it's a crappy retirement—and all the more charming for his exasperation. The supporting cast is Weston's best weapon, including lout-of-all-trades Sam (Bruce Campbell, he of Evil Dead), loony mom Madeline (Sharon Gless, half of Cagney & Lacey) and rival underworlder Carla (Tricia Helfer, Battlestar Galactica's Number Six). Tonight the series returns with the first of seven episodes that wrap up the second season with spy jujitsu, chase scenes and palm trees. But all you really need to know is that his name is Michael Weston, and he used to be a spy. Also tonight: Bones...

    Google + NYC = superfuntimes

    Thu Jan 22

The overwary among us might see nycgo.com, an information-sharing union between the city government and Google, as the harbinger of a dystopic Orwellian scenario in which we will all become gruel-eating worker drones just wordlessly shuttling to and from Internet-suggested destinations. But no, that's just the biased liberal media whining about something. No, this thing—featuring the combined might of New York, Google and, yes, your beloved Time Out New York, figures to be the mightiest collaboration since the Mega Powers.

    Aretha's hat for the people

    Thu Jan 22

If I must bite on an esteemed colleague's recent post, it is only with the best intentions. I am of the mind that every man, woman and child in America needs to know about this. Friends, countrymen, patriots: You too can wear Aretha's hat. If it's good enough for the Golden Girls, you know it's good enough for you. Note: There's already a Flickr group for hat photos. Sweet heavens, I love the Internet.
