John Chamberlain’s crushed-car sculptures have long been compared to the slashing brushstrokes of Abstract Expressionism, an analogy that’s perfectly suitable but misses the more salient quality of Chamberlain's oeuvre: the way he compresses the kinetic energy of violence into stately, even opulent, forms. The inherent refinement of his work is made all the more evident thanks to this installation, in which French architect and designer Jean Prouvé places Chamberlain’s sculptures within and around a pair of elegant pavilions, including one that resembles a high-modern bungalow.
