Construction is plugging along on Governors Island—phase one of an ongoing makeover, scheduled to be completed later this year, will bring 30 additional acres to the island, including a new sports field and an entire oasis filled with hammocks. (Hammocks!) In June, one of the island's largest structures, Building 877, was demolished to make way for the new improvements.

Now, you can actually get a glimpse at what the heck is happening on the island: The Trust for Governors Island posted photos (taken in June) to its Flickr account, giving you a bird's-eye view of the cone-shaped space—the photos were taken from spots like Downtown Brooklyn, the Statue of Liberty and the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. Unless you have access to a private helicopter, it's a pretty amazing view that you're unlikely to see elsewhere. (h/t Curbed)
