The Newsstand

Subway newsstands may be where you stop to pick up a bottle of water or a copy of the New York Post on your morning commute—but they're not where you'd expect to find vinyl records or a self-published zine. The Newsstand, a new project by creative firm ALLDAYEVERYDAY, brings indie publications underground, to a pop-up shop in the passageway between the Lorimer St L and Metropolitan Ave G stations.

The idea for the Newsstand was inspired by daily commuting: The folks at ALLDAYEVERYDAY noticed that the shop that had previously existed in the passageway closed late last year, and with that, the Newsstand was born. The company tasked Lele Saveri, founder of the 8 Ball Zine Fair, with curating a selection of zines and indie publications; Saveri also solicited contributions from booksellers McNally Jackson, Desert Island and Dashwood Books. Music fiends can find CDs, cassettes and vinyl curated by Greenpoint record shop Co-op 87.

The idea is to bring independent art to the masses, and the location is key: More than 13,000 people pass through the Lorimer St and Metropolitan Ave stations each day, making this an incredibly visible pop-up. If you want to check it out for yourself, the Newsstand is open Mon–Fri from 9am to 8pm and on weekends from noon to 5pm, and it'll occupy the space until July 20. The selection of on-sale items rotates frequently; to keep up with what's happening, follow ALLDAYEVERYDAY on Twitter or on its blog.

It's a cool place. I found a copy of the comic REID FLEMING: WORLD'S TOUGHEST MILKMAN and the "spaghetti-office-western" novel, BASTARDO.
