Sixteen Candles

What could be more romantic than a first kiss? Pretty much anything, according to Marisa Meltzer, author of Girl Power: The Nineties Revolution in Music, and Elizabeth Spiridakis, who runs the fashion blog White Lightning (feelslikewhitelightning.blogspot.com). For their one-off zine, released May 15 (aptly titled First Kiss), Meltzer and Spiridakis have compiled 50 firsthand accounts of newbie necking. “First-kiss stories are always pretty embarrassing or funny or weird, and everyone has one,” explains Meltzer. On Wednesday 26, the editors, along with First Kiss contributors like Emily Gould (And the Heart Says Whatever), Tavi Gevinson (thestylerookie.com) and Gavin McInnes (Street Boners: 1,714 Hipster Fashion Jokes), will share their tongue-tying tales, ranging from the awkwardly romantic to the cringe-inducing, at 92YTribeca. In the meantime, we’ve asked the editors to analyze five iconic pop-culture kisses, because, let’s face it: In a perfect world, your first kiss would resemble your favorite onscreen moment.

Sixteen Candles

The scene: Insecure Samantha “Sam” Baker (Molly Ringwald) is having the worst birthday ever until she kisses her crush, popular hottie Jake Ryan (Michael Schoeffling), on a tabletop that’s lit by the candles of the cake he’s brought her. “And then the movie just ends,” says Meltzer. “Because clearly her life is all downhill from here.”
The kiss: The kiss itself is chastely closed-mouthed—and riddled with setup flaws. “They don’t show the awkward part of them climbing onto the glass table,” notes Meltzer. “Also, kissing over flames? Seems like it would be kind of hot, maybe painful.”
The rating: She and Spiridakis give this iconic kiss four stars. “Watching that at the tender age of eight set up some...shall we say...unreasonable expectations of what my high-school experience with men would be like,” says Meltzer.

The Virgin Suicides

The scene: Trip (Josh Hartnett) wants to hook up with Lux Lisbon (Kirsten Dunst), but after a tense evening with her creepily protective parents, he returns to his car, defeated. “All of a sudden, the guitar from 'Crazy on You’ by Heart starts up and you see this flash of white, which is her running out of the house, diving into the car and making out with him like crazy,” Spiridakis sums up.
The kiss: “I still can’t listen to Heart without getting all riled up and wanting to make out,” confesses Spiridakis.
The rating: The unbridled adolescent lust earns five stars for bringing back memories: “They capture that urgent, manic, almost painful feeling of teenage hormones,” says Meltzer. “You want experience, you want boys, everything is heightened. It’s attack mode.”

Some Kind of Wonderful

The scene: Tomboy Watts (Mary Stuart Masterson) agrees to teach her best friend, Keith (Eric Stoltz), how to kiss before his date with the most popular girl in high school. Watts starts off bossy, but their kiss leaves her flustered and red-cheeked.
The kiss: Both women acknowledge that the best-friends-turned-lovers scenario can be treacherous. “The movie creates the expectation that guys you’re friends with are secretly carrying a torch for you. And when that actually happens, it’s totally awkward and not as good as Eric Stoltz,” says Spiridakis.
The rating: The ladies agree that the smooch deserves five stars for romance, music choice (“She Loves Me,” by Stephen Duffy) and hotness. (“They’re Frenching for sure,” notes Meltzer.)

The Wonder Years

The scene: It’s 1968, and Winnie Cooper’s (Danica McKellar) brother has been killed in Vietnam. Baby-faced Kevin Arnold (Fred Savage) finds her perched on a rock in the woods, grief-stricken. He sits next to her, puts his New York Jets jacket over her shoulders, then leans in for a gentle, prolonged kiss.
The kiss: “It’s pretty remarkable how smooth it is,” admits Meltzer. “Fred Savage is such an awkward dude, but he had some admirable kissing game.”
The rating: Both give the kiss three stars for being sweet and age-appropriate. “When I was nine and saw it, I was like, This is pretty much the best thing ever,” says Spiridakis.

Never Been Kissed

The scene: Aspiring reporter and kissing virgin Josie (Drew Barrymore) is assigned an undercover investigation of what high school is really like. Along the way, she becomes the cool girl she never was (Josie Gross-y!), and sparks fly with her English teacher, Sam (Michael Vartan). When her cover is blown, she writes a public apology and invites Sam to kiss her on the baseball diamond, resulting in a smooch under stadium lights.
The kiss: “The idea of ’fessing up that you haven’t been kissed when you’re in your early or mid-twenties is really appalling and something I would never ever do, and inviting that person to do it with you publicly makes me blush,” vents Spiridakis. “Also, I just can’t stand Drew Barrymore.”
The rating: While Meltzer gives the kiss three stars “for bravery, wish fulfillment and for being honest about sexual inexperience,” Spiridakis musters only an eye roll.

My So-Called Life

The scene: Angela Chase (Claire Danes) has a wicked crush on illiterate bad boy Jordan Catalano (Jared Leto), who is seemingly oblivious to her lust. While she sits in his car, he lunges to kiss her, taking her by surprise. She admonishes him: “I don’t open that wide at the dentist!”
The kiss: “This guy is so poorly suited to her that you want to tell her to stop wasting her time,” says Meltzer. But she recognizes the bittersweet reality in the much-anticipated kiss that surprises you before letting you down. “You can tell it’s not what she dreamed it would be,” Meltzer notes.
The rating: The ladies decide on two and a half stars out of five for an “emotionally painful” kiss that hits close to home.

Little Women

The scene: Laurie (Christian Bale) has returned from college, and his best friend, Jo (Winona Ryder), runs through the woods to meet him. She soon sees that something has changed in Laurie, and grows alarmed as he takes her hand, places his finger on her lips, and passionately kisses her. The painfully hot smooch almost makes up for the fact that Jo rebukes him, and he ends up marrying her bratty sister, Amy.
The kiss: “Her eyes are freaked out, but then she gets into it, and it’s the most amazing, beautiful kiss,” coos Spiridakis.
The rating: Meltzer matches Spiridakis’ rating of four stars: “I like the gentle resistance.”
