Construction on Governors Island, Sept 2013

Over the final weekend of Governors Island's 2013 season, the Trust for Governors Island opened up access to the 30 acres of new parkland that's been under construction since last year. The work is expected to be completed in time for the opening of the park's 2014 season.

Among the not-quite-finished sites that visitors were allowed to preview were Liggett Terrace, a six-acre expanse that will eventually feature public art, a seating area and more; and Hammock Grove, which we're assuming will be exactly as awesome as it sounds. (It's a grove! Filled with hammocks!) Click through the slide show above to see the construction—and be sure to check back here for updates on when all of this will open to the public.
