Idiotarod is now Idiotarodorama, due to cease-and-desist letter

The ridiculous event, celebrating a decade of absurd costumes and silliness, had to find a new name because of legal threats from the Alaskan Iditarod sled-dog race

Idiotarod 2013

The annual Idiotarod, coming to town this weekend for its tenth iteration, has been renamed Idiotarodorama NYC (a.k.a. "The Desistarod"). This afternoon, the event's organizers received a cease-and-desist letter from legal representatives of the Iditarod Trail Committee (ITC), which helms the Iditarod sled-dog race. Should you be unfamiliar with its etymology, the New York event takes inspiration from the Alaskan derby, but swaps people for dogs and shopping carts for sleds.

"Your use of 'Idiotarod' is certainly likely to dilute ITC's famous mark by reducing its sole association with the Iditarod sled-dog race, and by causing the public to associate the mark with an event that celebrates wacky costumes and antics over one that honors the endurance and athleticism of champion sled dogs and the courage and skill of the men and women that run them," read part of the attorney's letter.

It seems the original race's organizers are not so pleased by the name-borrowing, so the NYC event has been forced to take on a new title. However, it's still happening tomorrow at a location TBD. Stay tuned for photos of the nonsensical affair, and click through last year's Idiotarod for a taste of the madness to come.
