Jenny from the... Lower East Side?

P.S. 36 is located half a block from where Jennifer Lopez grew up. It has two cornices at the second-floor level that need explaining—why is it that printed on the sides of the building are AVENUE C, 9TH STREET and 8TH STREET?—Anthony Jones, Soundview, Bronx
You’re right; when J.Lo calls herself “Jenny from the Block,” this Unionport block is what she’s talking about. But contrary to the street names on the cornices, the school, located at 1070 Castle Hill Avenue, wasn’t airlifted here from Manhattan’s Alphabet City. “Avenue C was the old Bronx name for Castle Hill Avenue,” says Laura Tosi, librarian at the Bronx Historical Society. When today’s neighborhood was laid out in the Civil War days, the streets were given numbers or letters; what is now Unionport’s Blackrock Avenue was 8th Street until 1917, when it was renamed after the black rocks on shore of the Bronx River. The school, built in 1901, still bears the old signage.—Mary Wheeler
