Magnet Theater
Our own Comedy editor, Jane Borden, busts out improv on Thursdays in the Junior Varsity show (9pm, $5). There are a bunch of other less self-serving performances we can happily recommend, including the Made-Up Musical (Fri 10pm, $7) and 4Track (Sat 9pm, $7). 254 W 29th St between Seventh and Eighth Aves (212-244-8824, magnettheater.com)

Paul Mooney
There's a comedy legend performing right under your nose, people. Every month. And you can always get a ticket. Not only was this guy on Chappelle's Show (remember Negrodamus?), but he was Richard Pryor's writing partner, so you know he's opinionated, occasionally inappropriate—and hilarious. Carolines on Broadway, 1626 Broadway between 49th and 50th Sts (212-757-4100, carolines.com). $28.50 plus two-drink minimum.

Peoples Improv Theater
If you're up for taking a chance, the PIT hosts free jams every weeknight (Mon--Thu 11pm), in which improv teams, sketch groups and stand-ups try out their material. As at other comedy houses, the weekend gigs are most likely to sell out so reserve online in the afternoon. 123 E 24th St between Park and Lexington Aves (212-563-7488, thepit-nyc.com). 9:30pm; $5--$10. 11pm; free.

Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre
There's well-pedigreed improv, sketch and stand-up here all week, as late as 11pm Monday through Thursday, and midnight or 1am on the weekends. Cage Match (Thu 11pm; $5) and the Rejection Show (third Wednesday of the month 9:30pm; $5) are some of the usual sellouts—as are most weekend 9:30 and 10:30pm shows, so you'll need to make a reservation a couple days in advance. But the later gigs on those nights, and throughout the week, often have last-minute tickets available. 307 W 26th St between Eighth and Ninth Aves (212-366-9176, ucbtheatre.com)Jean Chen
