Salinger wishes Matthew had chosen a profession that didn't beat him down quite so much, and wonders if he'd be happier doing something less "chancey" than "the acting business." A fire ravaged Salinger's home, and destroyed everything except a piece of his bedroom and, "providentially," his workroom, where he kept his papers and manuscripts.
