Terrible news: Rolling Stone reports that legendary musician Lou Reed passed away earlier today. He was 71; no cause of death was reported, although RS did note that Reed underwent a liver transplant earlier this year. (At the time, Reed noted in a statement, "I am a triumph of modern medicine, physics and chemistry. I am bigger and stronger than stronger than ever.")
It's impossible to overstate how influential Reed was on modern music, both as a cofounder of the Velvet Underground and as a solo artist. He created some of the most enduring songs of the past few decades; collaborated with countless other musicians (including his wife, experimental musician and artist Laurie Anderson); and remained an active and still-vital presence in music right up until the end. He will be sorely missed.
