Stella

Breed:

She's about three years old; I adopted her from KittyKind at the Petco in Union Square in January 2006. She's pretty much your typical slightly aloof, secretly ridiculously affectionate, divalicious cat.

This is the star of this week's Seek Travel piece. She's also the bestest Chihuahua in the universe. We bought her for $150 off a redneck kitchen breeder in the asshole of Lancaster, PA. She's a little massive for her breed—naysayers insist she's mixed, bah—but we prefer to say "big-boned." Wouldn't want to hurt her feelings. Chihuahuas are very sensitive, you know.

Ronaldo the Rabbit

About the animal:

Hi there! I’m a Netherland dwarf mix, which means a small rabbit humped some other kind of rabbit (or was it the other way around?) and out I popped. My mommy found me at the Upper East Side store Pets on Lex one day when she was “just looking” at baby bunnies (yeah right). She took one peek in the cage where I was snuggling with my brothers and sisters, then turned to my daddy and said, “Oh, I want the little grey one.” You see, she had recently attended a party at the Harlem home of Johanna Fateman, who is in the band Le Tigre. There, she met Johanna’s house rabbit, Karen. Mommy was a little tipsy that night, so she came home with the harebrained (ha ha, get it?) idea that she wanted her very own little bunny.

Here’s a picture of me when I got into some mischief and mommy cut my ear off! Okay, not really. I love my mommy.

Nibz

About the animal:

This is the 12-year-old iguana who I've had since he was three inches long (he's now almost five feet). He's a vegetarian, though his favorites are bananas and collard greens. He roams freely through out our apartment though he spends most of his time sunning on his window perch, which is equipped with a UV lamp and heat rock.

Pet name:

Stella

About the animal:

This monster cost $45 at the pound in San Francisco (that should tell you something about her breed). She's the definition of high maintenance: she gets her nails done so she can't tear the house down (the red and green in this picture were the vet's idea of good holiday fun) and has never quite mastered an understanding of "no." She enjoys fetching and stealing writing utensils and her favorite foods are plastic and cashmere.

Pet name:

Queenie

About the animal:

Here is my incredibly fat (but ridiculously adorable) cat. She's 18 pounds (that's seven pounds overweight). She was an abandoned cat, and we (mistakenly) overfed her thinking she was starving. But now there's more of her to love, right? Queenie enjoys sleeping, being rubbed, snuggling, eating kitty caviar and watching TV. She loves to meet new people but is scared of babies. She is pretty much the best cat around.

Grover

About the animal:

My boy is a Malinois (a.k.a. a Belgian sheepdog) who I adopted from the North Shore Animal League in Port Washington back in May. He's about a year and a half old but still has loads of spastic puppy energy and loves nothing more than throwing stuff up in the air.

Pet name:

April

About the animal:

This is a replacement dog for my mom. My childhood dog Lily Shlep Along Mush Face, also a Shih Tzu, died on New Year's Eve this year. Here's a picture of her the day before she died. It's heart-wrenching, I'll warn you.

April, the new dog, is a puppy. My mother tried to name her Tawny until we showed her this. Also, she didn't like how her Queens accent wrapped around the "aw" in Tawny. We all feel it's for the best.

Pet name:

Speedy

About the animal:

We got our beloved big-boned kitty at Animal Care and Control in the snowstorm of January 2004 (after traveling 100 blocks on the Second Avenue bus). Though she has a decided food fetish (she loves to be petted while eating); regularly wakes us up at 5:00am; and has shredded most of the furniture in our apartment, we still immortalized her with a photo "painting" in honor of our third anniversary of ownership.

Pet name:

Darla

About the animal:

It's Darla the Portuguese water dog. She's been called a "person in a bear suit." She loves the water, loves people, but is a dominant bitch who hates other female dogs and can become an enraged muppet sometimes instead of her typical cute and cuddly self.

Eliot (a.k.a. "Eliot T. Rascal", "T", "T-Bone Malone" and "Stinky Kitty")

Breed:

Burmese

About the animal:

1. His best friend's name is Lionel, a fat cat who lives in Chelsea (but they've seen each other only once since we moved out of the 'hood).

2. I've written and illustrated a book and a song about him (he may be famous one day)

3. He's an escape artist! He loves to bolt out of the apartment and check out the neighbors. (That's how he met Lionel!)

4. I bought him at a UES pet store on Christmas Eve in 1999.

5. This photo shows him as a little kitty. (He'll only drink running water from the bathroom faucet!)

Andiamo (dog), Dannyboy (speckled cat) and Jupiter (black cat)

About the animals:

Andiamo’s a six-year-old Westie/Poodle. I adopted him a year ago from a great rescue group called Waggytail. Andi is as vicious as he is cute (I have the scars to prove it), but I love him anyway.

Mocha

About the animal:

I met this handsome devil at a shelter about a month ago and could not stop thinking about him. I was like a high school girl with a crush. I had been planning on getting a breed upstate, but this dog was recommended by a friend who had fostered him. A few days later I saw him again and just knew. So my husband and I adopted him and he immediately became part of our family. He's so fun, smart, goofy and a total love bug. To celebrate our first week together, I took him to the garden of a local bar where he was loved on by everyone around. I'm totally unbiased, but I'm telling you, Mocha's the best dog on the planet.

Cucho

About the animal:

This is a 15-year-old tabby who really believes he’s a person. He answers to his name and can have a conversation for hours, sometimes meowing for no reason as if he’s talking to himself. He’s got lots of attitude but has gotten extra affectionate in his old age.

Pet name:

Ziggy

Breed:

Tabby

About the animal:

I adopted Ziggy when he was five weeks old (as seen in the pictures). He is now almost six months old and his energy level is exceeding my 350-square-foot apartment, as indicated by broken wine glasses and a ripped up Jennifer Convertible couch.

Ziggy loves watching the scores on ESPN scroll by on the screen and enjoys anything on Animal Planet except Animal Precinct; it depresses him. He loves water, contrary to stereotypical cat-like behavior, and has a thing for the Maltese pooch next door. She, unfortunately, does not reciprocate those feelings as seen in their few encounters in the hallway, during which she growls at him.

Ziggy eats dust, bronzer, toilet paper, lint and anything not considered edible, and his favorite place to sleep is the bathtub. His best friend Leroy, a stuffed-animal bear (which is meant for a dog), can’t keep up with Ziggy either as his stuffing is starting to show—and so are my stress lines.
