The Historical Society culled thousands of photos from their massive archives to recapture both the horror of the World Trade Center attacks and the courage and compassion shown by New Yorkers in their aftermath.

FREE Trinity Church, Broadway at Wall St (trinitywallstreet.org) Subway: J, M, Z to Broad St; R, W, 1 to Rector St; 2, 3, 4, 5 to Wall St. Tue 11 at 8:15am.
After morning prayers, Trinity Church’s bells will be rung 3,018 times at 8:43am—once for each life lost at Ground Zero—followed by a meditative musical performance at 1:30pm. A service at St. Paul’s Chapel on Broadway and Fulton St (saintpaulschapel.org) includes a ringing of the Bell of Hope and a nondenominational remembrance led by Rev. Stuart H. Hoke.

9/11 WTC Memorial Floating Lanterns Ceremony


FREE South Side of Pier 40, West St at Houston St (212-678-0305, newyorkbuddhistchurch.org). Subway: R, W to Prince St; 1 to Houston St. Tue 11 6–7:45pm.
As in years past, the New York Buddhist Church adopts the Japanese tradition of floating paper lanterns to honor those lost at Ground Zero. Members of the public are invited to write the name of a loved one (or a message of peace) on a note to be carried down the Hudson.

Guitarist Tim Tuttle and other musicians remember the fallen—and raise money for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund—at this benefit show at the Knitting Factory.

Saint of 9/11

Few New Yorkers epitomize the city’s spirit of compassion and courage better than FDNY chaplain Father Mychal Judge, who died tending to his flock at Ground Zero. Judge’s life of service and dignity is honored in Glenn Holsten’s 2006 documentary.

Sixth Annual September Concert


FREE Various venues around the city (septemberconcert.org). Tue 11 noon–5pm.
Musicians at more than 80 venues in all five boroughs—including Central Park, Rockefeller Center, Washington Square Park and Williamsburg’s McCarren Park—spread a message of peace and harmony in this annual performance. At 7:30pm, the New York Choral Society will perform at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
