Lighting of the Coney Island Parachute Jump, June 2013

It was a big weekend for Coney Island. On Saturday, the Mermaid Parade made a triumphant return after facing cancellation due to lack of funds. But before that, the new illuminations on the Parachute Jump were switched on, coinciding with the first boardwalk fireworks of the season.

The towering landmark structure now boasts 8,000 LED multicolor lights, which can put on some nifty displays (check out the video below to see it in its all glory, thumping soundtrack and all). It's certainly an eyeful, but we can't help feeling like we're looking at a gigantic flashing palm tree in Vegas. Maybe it's just us. Let us know what you think in the comments.

I am happy that Coney island is coming back. now,we need for the rides like the Tornado besides the Thunderbolt to come back, and a new steeplechase.Put something in that old movie theater like maybe a hotel or a mall with live shows.
