The High Line at the Rail Yards
What it is: High Line lovers will soon have reason to rejoice: Construction on the third and final section of the elevated park is underway. This portion, which will partially encircle the West Side Rail Yards, will be completed in stages, with the first part expected to open in 2014.
Why you should care: As little as five years ago, it seemed as though the High Line might never be finished. Construction on the park began in 2006, but stalled at various points: Lead paint had to be removed before progress could be made on the first section, while the second part’s debut was pushed back a year, to 2011. But with the groundbreaking on section three (which happened in September), a fully realized High Line feels imminent. Considering how many people the park attracts—more than 3.7 million strolled along the railway in 2011—the expansion will be a welcome addition to the city’s landscape. Along with expanded seating, walkways and gardens, features like picnic tables and a play area for kids are planned. W 30th St and Tenth Ave to W 34th St and Eleventh Ave (thehighline.org).
