New Yorkers are nothing if not determined: Yesterday's record-breaking cold temperatures didn't stop people from riding Citi Bikes throughout the city, with 6,669 trips taken over the course of the day. The company annouced the number via Twitter. (The key, according to one rider on Twitter, was "a ski mask and long johns"; we're assuming other riders had their own cold-weather coping mechanisms.)
Citi Bike isn't the only bike-sharing program that is going strong this winter: Chicago's Divvy Bikes and Washington, D.C.'s Capital Bikeshare, among others, will remain in operation during cold weather. The Bikeshare website has a good analysis of the benefits and issues the systems may face during inclement weather.
