We at TONY have been eagerly awaiting more information on opening of large areas of new space on Governors Island, which we wrote about in our New places feature last fall. Now, the Trust for Governors Island has announced that it will be unveiling 30 acres of new parkland on October 30 (happy early Halloween?). The area will include sports fields, hedges and best of all, a vertiginous grove filled with hammocks strung between trees.
Since the new extension isn’t opening until after the island’s regular season (May 25–Sept 29), the reclining public won’t get a chance to test out the amenities until spring 2014. Still, the Trust plans to hold sneak-preview guided tours. While construction continues, whet your appetite for indolence with the above rendering.
