Matt Smith and Steven Moffat at the Way Station

Doctor Who fans who showed up at the Way Station last night to watch the finale of the show's eighth season got a hell of a surprise—and we don’t just mean the episode’s big ending reveal (in the words of River Song: spoilers!). Among the assembled crowd were none other than 11th Doctor, Matt Smith, and show runner Steven Moffat.

This isn’t the first time the Brits have stopped by the Prospect Heights bar, renowned in sci-fi circles for its bathroom, which is tricked out to look like the Doctor’s TARDIS. Moffat and Smith settled in for the episode (in the company of Sue Vertue, the producer on Moffat’s other current series, Sherlock) at one of the Way Station’s swanky red leather booths to watch “The Name of the Doctor” alongside fans.

Afterward, Moffat stood to give a brief, delighted speech about fanboys who become head writers, and to express his thanks. “We are only here for one reason: because we really wanted to be here,” he enthused. The pair stuck around for photos and autographs, and Moffat signed the TARDIS, adding his signature to those of Smith, former companion Karen Gillan, and comedian and Who lover Chris Hardwick.

Check out the video below to hear what Moffat had to say. (Warning: Contains discussion of a major plot point from the latest episode.)
