See the blending and separation of men and women in NYC in GIF form
This amazing animated dot map depicts the flow of population in New York City by age and sex.

We're mesmerized by this blooming animation of New York City, a sequence of density dot maps that track and show the city's men and women as they age. The GIF was created by UXBlog's John Nelson, who used the U.S. Census Bureau's gender and population counts to compile his data. The impressive pointillistic map separates NYC residents by gender (neon blue for men, pink for women), and depicts their "blending and segregation" from birth to death.
It's pretty interesting to see the dots come together and separate over the years. Fast Company blog Co.Exist points out the chilling and depression prevalence of men in their 20s imprisoned at Rikers Island, while women of the same age congregate in Morningside Heights, presumably at all-female institution Barnard College. Yikes.
