Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 6 rendering

We've been intrigued by the changes that lie ahead for Brooklyn Bridge Park's Pier 6 for a while now, and the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy just shared with us the renderings in the slide show above. The first two showcase the major, $21 million landscaping plan, designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, that will develop the outer two thirds of the pier, adding a centralized flower meadow, lawn areas for lounging and public programs, and perimeter plantings that will add shade and character to the waterfront space.

Luckily, this part of the project has already been funded. The project whose future is as yet uncertain—an elegant, elevated viewing platform designed by the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG)—is rendered in the next four slides. The proposed hardwood-clad structure, to be situated at the southern end of the pier and made of laminated timber, would provide a tiered top deck that juts out over the edge of the pier, and also a sheltered space underneath that would give visitors shade. Its cost: an estimated $8 million. We hope the swooping structure gets funded, but whatever the case, we're excited about the news—even if we don't yet know when construction will begin.
