A new boutique hotel with serious cocktails and an artsy design is turning NYC’s most reviled nabe into (dare we say it?) a destination

With its sleek trappings, the brand-new citizenM hotel immediately stands out from its nondescript, touristy Times Square neighbors. Guests check themselves in using self-service computers, and the lobby lounge buzzes with groups chatting over cocktails, while solo road warriors huddle around iPads (yep, there’s free Wi-Fi). The hotel was tailored for urbane, tech-savvy travelers, but thanks to works by artists such as Andy Warhol, floor-to-ceiling shelves packed with undeniably cool objets, and a bookstore selling droolworthy coffee-table tomes, even citizens of New York might want to spend the night—or at least stop by.

Looking for a place to actually enjoy that pretheater drink? Cocktail heavyweights Jason Littrell (formerly of Milk & Honey and Little Branch) and Mark Drew created specialty beverages for the hotel bar, like the Eastside Fizz ($14), a refreshing concoction of gin, lime juice, cucumber and mint leaves. And if you’re feeling peckish, there are goods from local vendors, including Mast Brothers Chocolate and Il Laboratorio del Gelato, at the cafeteria-style canteenM. Sure beats Bubba Gump.

Should you party till you drop, crash in one of the podlike rooms (starting at $199), which feature king-size beds, a rain shower, and tablets that control lighting, music and more.

Outdoor spaces include a ground-floor courtyard and three terraces, one of which offers alfresco yoga. Expect the 21st-story rooftop bar to pack 'em in when it opens later this spring.
