Verizon adds Wi-Fi and phone service in 35 NYC subway stations
Customers of the phone company can now send texts, make calls and surf the Web while underground on Manhattan’s West Side
Tue Jan 28 2014
Woo-hoo! NYC is kind of, sort of on its way to joining other civilized metropolises (see: Stockholm, London, Tokyo et al.), as 35 subway stations are now getting wireless service from Verizon. The communications company announced today the launch of voice and 3G and 4G LTE data service on Manhattan's West Side from 23rd Street to 96th Street. We wish commuters from the outer boroughs could benefit from this news, but hey, it's a start!
Non-Verizon customers, don't despair: New Yorkers using AT&T and T-Mobile already have service in many stations, and Sprint wireless is on the way. As for folks who may want to access the Internet not on the island's western corridor, remember that today's service improvement is one phase of many by Transit Wireless intended to bring Wi-Fi to the entire subway system by 2017.
In addition to texting your friends when you're stuck on the train and checking your Facebook, you'll now be able to dial 911 in case of an emergency. Dispatchers will be aware of calls made underground and of their approximate location so that they can best help you out.
The newly connected stations are copied below below. Head over to the Transit Wireless website to find the full list of operational subway stations.
