Water Taxi Beach
For a friendly kick-about—or to pretend that you’re on a beach in Rio—grab some friends and dig your toes into Long Island City sand. It’s free, and you don’t have to worry about those pesky park permits. Just remember, it’s BYOB (bring your own ball). 54-34 2nd St at Borden Ave, Long Island City, Queens (212-742-1969, watertaxibeach.com). Mon--Thu 4--10pm, Fri 4pm--3am, Sat noon--3am, Sun 1--10pm; free.

PUMA City
The sports brand’s takeover of South Street Seaport includes a miniature field for three-on-three games. It’s first-come, first-served, so show up solo or with a crowd and see the pitch manager to put your name on the list. Fulton St at Water St (pumacity.com). Daily 9am--9pm; free.

Brooklyn Pickup Soccer
This coed Meetup group has bagged a permit for Turf 9 (the American-football pitch) in Prospect Park Parade Grounds on Sundays through June 27. They play width-ways and bring small, six-foot, D-shaped goals, so no one gets stuck being the keeper. With 43 R.S.V.P. places available, you’ll compete in two or three eight-on-eight games against different teams. The players include a lot of experienced footballers, but beginners assimilate easily, and thanks to mixed-ability teams, everybody gets a fair shake, er, kick. The group also runs a free 9:45am Sunday game in Prospect Park’s Long Meadow, if you feel like a doubleheader. Coney Island Ave between Caton and Parkside Aves (meetup.com/bklynpickupsoccer). Sun 2pm; $3. Through Jun 27.

Prospect Park (Beginner/Intermediate) Pickup Soccer
Although this is a coed Meetup group, weeknight games in Prospect Park’s Long Meadow are women-only (but free!). Although the organizers lost their permit for the Prospect Park Parade Grounds for June, look for weekend coed games to start in July. meetup.com/prospect-park-soccer

Soccer NYC
Rather than monitoring Meetup to find a convenient game, sign up on this website, designed by information professional Leala Abbott. It acts as a hub for a number of different groups and teams, many looking for last-minute ringers. In addition to one-offs, there’s the chance to enter one-day tournaments. soccernyc.org

The World Soccer Project
Your next opportunity to enroll in a league starts June 13, for these games played at Highland Park’s new turf pitch. Gather your own squad of ten, for seven-on-seven games, or 12 for nine-on-nine matches ($99 per player), or register as a free agent ($99) and be assigned a team. No matter what you do, you’ll be safe in the knowledge that this socially conscious league provides accident coverage (although slide tackles are banned anyway), and that you’re helping the local Fund for Public Schools, which supports sporting programs and the international Steve Nash Foundation. theworldsoccerproject.com

Pickup Soccer NYC
Born out of director and cofounder Susanna Thornton’s frustration with ultracompetitive leagues, this nonprofit organization operates as a year-round, all-level soccer club. “We don’t have standings,” she explains. “We meet up for the enjoyment of the game.” Another advantage is flexibility: Buy a season pass ($250) to access all the games during the nine-to-12-week season, or sign up for a particular day each week for $100. You don’t have to attend every game, and since each one is an hour and a half to three hours long, you can even show up late. Games are held throughout Manhattan, including Central Park, Riverside Park, Sara D. Roosevelt Park and Pier 40. pickupsoccernyc.org

New York Coed Soccer
Organized by Glaswegian Colin McLear, this year-round league plays mainly in Williamsburg, Chelsea and the Lower East Side, and has separate divisions for different experience levels. Sign up for a weekly game over a ten-week season for $140 per player, or starting at around $1,400 for teams. nycoedsoccer.com

New York Metropolitan Women’s Soccer League
NYMWSL is the city’s U.S. Soccer Federation--associated women’s league. It consists of a competitive first division and a purely recreational second division. Still, this isn’t a league for beginners—you’ll need to know how to play. Seasons run from September through early December, and mid-March through early June. Games take place most Sundays, mainly at the East River Park at East 6th Street and FDR Drive, with an additional weekly practice night that varies by team. Fees also vary, but start at around $150 a season. nywomensoccer.org

New York Ramblers
New York’s first gay soccer club, formed in 1980, takes its name from Central Park’s Ramble—once known as a gay cruising spot. It’s a good option for soccer fans who want to boost their social lives, as members get together at other events throughout the year. Annual dues are $100, but the club offers a reduced rate of $40 for students or “those with financial hardship.” There are also fees ($5--$8) for weekly practice sessions. newyorkramblers.org

NYC Soccer Collective
Actor, singer and soccer coach Dana Dimon runs this organization, which encompasses an open league (open to all) with two divisions, as well as a club made up of three competitive teams (by tryout only). Teams play year-round, between one and two days a week for ten to 12 weeks, at Pier 40 and the Nike Field at the Lower East Side’s Sara D. Roosevelt Park. Fees are $160 for individuals or $1,550 for teams, and there are discounts for returning teams. nycsoccercollective.net
