Heads up, runners: General registration for the ING New York City Marathon, which happens on November 3, opens to the public today. Full details are available on the marathon's website, but the basic gist: If you don't have guaranteed entry to the race, you'll have to register for a spot in an open lottery; registration is open through May 24, and the drawing to determine who gets a spot will happen in late May.
RECOMMENDED: All ING New York City Marathon coverage
Of note: There are fewer lottery spots than in years past, since host organization New York Road Runners is working to accommodate participants who were shut out last year, when the marathon was canceled due to the aftereffects of Hurricane Sandy. In the wake of last week's bombing at the Boston Marathon, New York Road Runners also issued a statement reaffirming that "the safety and security of all New York Road Runners’ races is and will always be our top priority." (The organization hasn't given specific details on how security for this year's race may change, though we'd guess that it will be tighter than ever.)
