Although it’s a subsidiary brand of global giant Hyatt, Andaz prides itself in giving each property a local flavor. Its first New York hotel (a second opened on Fifth Avenue in summer 2010) occupies the first 13 floors of a former Barclays Bank building, outfitted by David Rockwell. The vibe inside is anything but corporate: Upon entering the spacious lobby-lounge, where a barista brews espresso from the New York–based Roasting Plant, you’re greeted by a free-range "host," who acts as check-in clerk and concierge. The chic, loft-style rooms (starting at 350 square feet) are equally casual and user-friendly. A long, blond-wood unit serves as desk, entertainment console and dressing table (the TV has a vanity mirror on the back); remote-controlled blinds descend to cover the seven-foot windows; and nonalcoholic drinks and snacks are free. The local-centric restaurant, Wall & Water, along with the bar and spa, are welcome attributes in an area with little action on weekends. Rooms: 253.
