The unassuming, boxy Mercury Lounge is both an old standby and pretty much the number-one indie-rock club in town, with solid sound and sight lines (and a cramped bar in the front room). There are four-band bills most nights, though they can seem stylistically haphazard, and set times are often later than advertised. It's a good idea to get tickets for bigger shows in advance.

This is one of the many venues that gives the Lower East Side its reputation for intimate shows and the opportunity to see artists before they make their name.

I had the chance to see Rayland Baxter there. In addition to being able to watch him perform from about 3 feet away, my friend and I also walking in with him (and watched him heckle the bouncer for not knowing him). Before he took the stage, we also had a bit of a celeb sightingLake Street Dive. They were there supporting a friend who opened for Rayland, and it was a beautiful moment.

Overall, it's a great spot for music nerds and newbs alike and provides a great start to an LES night. . There's a nice little bar inside so you can grab a drink before the show, or you can dart across the street to Boulton & Watt.

Such a fun venue to see live music! The venue is small so makes for it to be an intimate show. You can also often hang out and meet the bands as they walk through the crowd to get to the stage. The front bar is very cool too.
