Pineapple bun at Golden Unicorn
Golden Unicorn Restaurant
Dim sum novices should visit this Chinatown spot, where carts bear English labels so you’ll know what you’re getting. The hostess shouting into a walkie-talkie in the lobby will herd the crowd into an elevator and assign patrons to a floor. Spring rolls, shumai and shrimp dumplings are familiar and satisfying. Arrive before 10am on weekends to beat

Met my family (aunts, uncles, cousins) here while they were visiting. They warned us about the 90 minute wait (we were a group of nine)… Ended up being a little over 90 minutes. At least they were truthful about it from the start! The lady yelling numbers over the loudspeaker is part of the whole experience, right?! Glad I was with my (Chinese-speaking) family members—don't bother coming if you don't know Chinese/don't know exactly what you're ordering! Options are very limited for vegetarians but… My guess is that this obviously isn't a vegetarian destination anyway! It was a nice time with the family, though.
Authentic Dim Sum experience! If you want the real deal go on Sunday, traditional time for Dim Sum. Lots of choices and you'll be in a food wonderland.
I went to the Golden Unicorn Restaurant based on others recommendations. Although the selection of dim sum was diverse, what I was served was decidedly mediocre. During lunch time, only the steamed dim sum was quite warm. The fried dim sum and spring rolls were not room temperature. My benchmark for dim sum is admittedly a restaurant not in New York City, but compared to my favorite, this place only rates one star.
