Before Buttermilk Channel peeled the butcher paper from its broad bay windows, Frankies 457 owned lower Court Street’s finer-dining beat. But this bright, charming restaurant—and its talented chef Ryan Angulo (Stanton Social)—has pumped some much-needed competition into this quiet corner of Carroll Gardens. Buttermilk Channel has a way with the locals, and the menu emphasizes its hometown flavor. New York State dominates the taps and the wine list; nearby Esposito’s Pork Store provides the links for a satisfying sausage roll; and a first-rate starter layers vibrant local delicata squash with tart buttermilk-based ricotta (made, naturally, in-house). Comfort-food entres also hit close to home. A singular duck meat loaf, packed with caramelized onions and swollen raisins, is served alongside the classic steakhouse accompaniments of creamed spinach fortified with celery root and a fat fried onion-ring halo. A more ascetic dish of flaky brook trout speaks of the South—the fish is rolled in smoky bacon and served over crumbly johnnycakes. Desserts are similarly straightforward: Doug’s pecan pie sundae (named for its creator, owner Doug Crowell) has the simple brilliance of a midnight snack conjured in your parents’ kitchen. The nutty, brown-sugary pie is pressed—crust and all—into an old-fashioned tulip cup, lavished with airy cream and Blue Marble’s butter-pecan ice cream—another local flourish for the consummate neighborhood joint.

I expected this to be divine, but the fact that my chicken and waffle was cold made me want to cry. I live for a good hot delicious chicken and waffle plate and this did not leave me satisfied. Good thing my partner ordered the hanger steak with Brussel sprouts which was super flavorful. We also ordered a side of mash potatoes which were hot compared to my meal. I will try to give this restaurant another try but I was not too impressed.

Food coma heaven. Buttermilk Channel is warm and inviting, not to mention their chicken and waffles will leave you licking your plate when you're done. It's a great local spot, and I've never had a bad meal here. Expect a wait, but there's a bar where you can get a cocktail and the staff is friendly and very accommodating!

Buttermilk Channel. The place that put chicken on waffles on the map, at least in New York. 


This might be the very "trendy" restaurant I ever tried back when I was in high school and it opened. I've been back about 10 times since and it never fails. 


Buttermilk isn't trying to be anything over the top, just a great neighborhood spot that cares about its food and its customers. As overrated as you might think chicken and waffles are, they're a must-over, as is the amazing pecan pie sundae, which I'm always too full to eat, but I order it anyway.


Tip: If you're looking for a good excuse to go out on a Monday, they're $35 prix fix menu is a great option too!

Cool neighborhood brunch spot. A very hip and young crowd. There was a line out the door when I arrived, but dining solo has its perks and I immediately found a seat at the bar.


I ordered the Banana Walnut sticky bun and fried pork chops with cheddar waffles.


I was really disappointed with the banana wanly sticky bun. It didn't taste anything like banana and had, like, one walnut. It was dry and unremarkable so I didn't finish eating it. 


The pork chop with cheddar waffles was much better. Careful when it arrives because it is deep fried and very hot! The breading on the pork chop was flavorful and delicious. The pork chop was moist and tender. 


The cheddar waffles were good, but not particularly cheddary.


The service was efficient. The staff behind the bar was very busy. It was actually pretty fun watching the staff pour mimosa after mimosa. Every server had their own style.

This place is the kind of place that has a line out the door for brunch, which is something I usually avoid like the plague, but here it is SO worth it. Especially if you can sit outside. And especially if you get one of their very special bloody marys. Plus every single thing I've eaten on their menu for both brunch and dinner is just delicious. The coffee pot de creme for dessert is one of the most magical things I've very eaten. Plus the ambience is exactly what I'm looking for, very decadent but also warm and inviting. Can't love this place enough! Always a good experience.

Comfort in food form! This place has the best vibe—it's just clean and bright and lovely—and solid, filling, delicious food. I always order too much because I can't decide what to get, and I'm never sorry I did. Do not skip the fried chicken and waffle or the pecan pie in a glass. My favorite thing to do it sit at the bar and eat, so you can talk to the bartenders and everyone else that's there stuffing their face. It's a particularly nice way to end a weekend, so head there on a Sunday night, find a seat at the bar and have at it.

Went here with my father and a friend about a month and a half ago. The food was good, I had the duck meatloaf which was delicious. We had 3 waitresses serving us 2 of which were very friendly and helpful. One on the other hand was nothing short of a disgrace. She was aloof and arrogant. Whenever we tried to order something off her it was like asking a teenager to go upstairs and do their homework, rolling eyes and sloping shoulders. That I could just about tolerate, however she really did herself and her employers proud when my father waved at her to collect the bill and she retorted 'seriously? that's how you get my attention?' in a tone of voice suggesting nothing other than disdain. Admittedly he did wave at her in a kinda quirky 'jazz hands' sort of way (a little embarrassing I know that's what dad's do I guess). However he was not rude or disrespectful by any means. Couldn't help notice that she waited until she collected the bill (meaning less of a chance to remove the tip) before she really laid the on the charm. The saddest thing is (as my review reflects) that we have all remembered her behavior and actions much more than the restaurant itself, which is a shame because everything else was good. If I were to give 3 bits of advice to the proprietors of this establishment they would be SACK THAT WAITRESS!!! If you want to get in contact with me to discuss I would be more than happy.
