Strand Bookstore

Boasting 18 miles of books, the Strand has a mammoth collection of more than 2 million discount volumes, and the store is made all the more daunting by its chaotic, towering shelves and surly staff. Reviewer discounts are in the basement, while rare volumes lurk upstairs. If you spend enough time here you can find just about anything, from that out-of-print Victorian book on manners to the kitschiest of sci-fi pulp.

Eight miles of books. EIGHT MILES OF BOOKS! You can't call yourself a New Yorker until you've spent hours roaming the rows on rows on rows of bookshelves. An absolute New York icon—it's barely changed over the years. (And that's a good thing.) Put down the Kindle and go read an actual book.

I love going here, you could easily spend half the day here. Amazing selection of new and used books, and it's nice to know you're supporting a real bookstore and not a chain or Amazon. The only con is that sometimes it can get overwhelming and claustrophobic inside (the aisles are really narrow and it can get super crowded especially on weekends.) I've found quite a few gems here though like old out of print books, my treasure is an old book on Native American history that I don't think you can find anywhere else.

A book-lover's (almost) paradise. The dollar section is worth a long browse, you could drop $40 without even knowing it with all the random titles out there, plus some hidden gems. You can also sell your old books here that are in good condition for some extra cash! They have a lot of fun events here, like the OKCupid book swap and lots of author talks, and the booksellers do actually know their stuff. It's always very crowded in here as the most famous book store in the city, so it doesn't exactly have that sit in a corner and read for hours vibe, but you can feel the history seeping through the place.

Could spend hours just browsing their dollar section outside! Great bookstore with a lot of history... also has some pretty spectacular events/readings
