Metallica at Madison Square Garden, November 2009

Metallica's 2009 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame punctuated the group's extended march out of the underground metal scene. Having long since forfeited its cutting-edge status, the Bay Area--based quartet officially joined Led Zep and the Stones in the annals of classic rock. As if to reiterate the point, the band recently announced that it had recorded a collaborative LP with none other than caustic icon Lou Reed. For Metallica, appearing as part of the Big 4 of thrash metal—a consensus pantheon that solidified in the mid-'80s—is a nostalgic look back to its young-and-hungry days.

For Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax, all of which have made major strides in popularity yet never entirely outgrew the metal ghetto, it's a chance to both commune with diehards and bask in some of Metallica's megastar wattage. We're predicting greatest-hits-oriented sets, plus an all-hands-on-deck encore, and the Big 4's local debut ought to find Slayer and Megadeth in particularly no-nonsense form. The former's recent material echoes its peak years in the mid-'80s, and the latter is hawking a reissue of its 1986 sophomore effort, Peace Sells...but Who's Buying? The wild card is NYC's own Anthrax, celebrating its 30th anniversary this year with a new full-length, Worship Music. Speed-crazed leaked track "Fight 'Em 'Til You Can't" demonstrates that for this Big crew, thrash is very much a present-tense concern. Yankee Stadium (ticketmaster.com). Sept 14 at 4pm; $94.50--$229.50.
