October 2007 marks the 100th birthday of the city’s grandest hotel. In honor of its centennial, the Plaza has undergone some drastic changes: The five-star has now converted most of its hotel rooms into luxury condos—many of which have been snapped up for many millions of dollars. All told, the $350 million renovation of the French Renaissance–style building will result in 182 luxury residences and 282 hotel rooms. Happily, visitors hoping to step back in time and get a taste of the glory days won’t be disappointed. Eight of the hotel’s most revered public spaces—including the Oak Room, Palm Court and Grand Ballroom—have been designated as landmarks. What’s more, features such as the Palm Court’s intricate stained-glass ceiling have been recreated in the neo-classical style that architect Henry Hardenburgh intended (the Palm Court’s original ceiling was painted over in the 1940s.). Rooms: 282. Bars (2). Gym. High-speed wireless Internet (free). Restaurants (2). Spa.
